The Australian Drifting Grand Prix is Australia’s number 1 National drifting series, where the best professional drivers come to battle it out for the title of Australian Drifting Champion. First founded in 2011 the ADGP (Australian Drifting Grand Prix) set a new benchmark for drifting and motorsport events in Australia. The exact origin of “Drifting” is not know but the history of drifting goes way back to the 1960’s to the winding mountain roads of Japan.
In the 70’s it was noticed as Japanese Touring Car drivers would push the cars to the limits of the tyres showing awesome sideways car control and it started to evolve. The art of Drifting as we know it today grew among the street racers for more than 15 years and morphed into one of the Japan’s number one attended motorsports in less than a decade and the rest of the World soon followed.
Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels, while maintaining control from entry to exit of a corner. A car is drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle, to such an extent where the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn, also known as opposite lock or counter-steering.
As a motorsport discipline, professional drifting competitions now are held worldwide and are judged according to the speed, angle, overall impact and the line taken through a set of corners.
A drifting competition consists of practice, solo qualifying and tandem battles. The organisers, Track Battle Pty Ltd, capitalise on this further to provide the best automotive entertainment in Australia, taking drifting from motorsport to “Extreme-Motorsport”. They take drifting to new heights with the use of new track layouts and custom built course’s, like the wall scraping, bank riding, tyre smoking action where ADGP all began the Calder Park Thunderdome.
The Australian Drifting Grand Prix National championship consist of 4 rounds in 4 different states.
