Word With the Winner

Round 2 of the 2015/16 Season saw another new venue and another podium for a very in form Josh Boettcher. JB is very well respected by the drifting world and has the GT Radial S15 dialled in! ADGP Championship Manager, Brett Wilkinson caught up with an ecstatic JB after his win at AIR.

ADGP: Congratulations on the win, you have now taken the championship lead with 2 rounds to go, how does it feel? 

JB: Thank you, it’s a great feeling!  My crew work so hard to get the car ready for each event.  We spend so much time getting the car on point and making sure it’s reliable and super competitive. It’s a lot of commitment from all of us, so it’s awesome to be able to get this result for the team and put us in the best position possible heading into the last 2 rounds!  I can’t thank everyone involved enough for keeping this beast on track and ready to win!

ADGP: After taking out the final round last season, which then secured you 3rd place in the 2014/15 Championship the momentum must be driving you to continue pushing so hard?

JB: Yes, we’ve definitely been on a roll since that final round last year.  At that event last season in Sydney, for the first time since we’ve had the V8 on board, the car, the team and I really clicked and felt 100%.  Since then, we’ve gained confidence and we’ve been able to step it up and push harder every time we hit the track, which is exactly what we had to do at AIR when attacking that high speed bank!

ADGP: The track layout at Adelaide International Raceway definitely appeared to suit the higher horsepower cars, do you think that was a big factor in allowing you to stand on the top step?

JB: It was a fast track for sure and my car/engine setup really suits higher speed tracks.  But in our run through the battle tree we came up against 3 past Australian champions and last year’s ADGP Rookie of the Year, and they are all packing very similar horse power to us. So I think the power we have made it possible for us to compete for the win against these other wild, high horsepower Aussie drift cars.  At the same time, running the whole wall on the final corner took a whole lot of commitment no matter what power you had!

ADGP: We have seen a bit of car development coming out of the Boettcher Camp, talk us through the changes and the mind set behind them?

JB: We spent pretty much the whole off season pulling the car right down to a bare shell, doing things smarter and tailor making everything to suit the harsh treatment that the car gets in this type of competition, then we gave it a whole new look as well.  We had a number of things we wanted to achieve, but the main changes were moving the radiator to the back of the car for balance and better cooling, creating a smart tube frame rear section that lets me scrape the walls with confidence and makes it much easier to repair.  Thanks to the smart thinking and massive effort from my team and the support of my loyal sponsors we got the job done and couldn’t be happier with the finished product.  The cooling is amazingly efficient and we are able to scrape walls with ease as planned, and the car looks amazing now to!

ADGP: So where from here? Round 3 is a home track, then Round 4 at Barbagallo Raceway is another fast flowing venue, how do you attack these two events with the mindset of putting the number 1 on your door come May?

JB: Heading into Round 3 in Queensland in the lead of the series is perfect for us. It’s the first home round for us since 2011, the track is only 20 minutes from where I live and only 10 minutes from Ian Boettcher Race Parts where we prepare our car, so it couldn’t be closer for our team.  I have so many friends and family that haven’t been able to travel to these events around Australia, so it will be great to give them a chance to see what this series is all about.  The track at Queensland Raceway will give the fans some pretty wild action and really allows us drivers to pull some very aggressive entries and chase runs, so that will be awesome to watch!  Then heading into the final round at Barbagallo as part of the V8 Supercars event will be an awesome way to finish the series. We like the fast flowing track there, so we’re looking forward to flying up that hill and battling it out for the championship all the way!
